Prof. Dr. Igor Calzada, in collaboration with co-author Itziar Eizaguirre, has published an open-access editorial in the Springer Nature journal Discover Cities. The article, titled
“Digital inclusion and Urban AI: strategic roadmapping and policy challenges”, marks a critical reflection on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in urban governance.
This editorial presents a forward-looking framework for transitioning from tech-centric Smart Cities toward a more inclusive, rights-based Urban AI—grounding innovation in algorithmic accountability, data cooperatives, and participatory governance. The publication particularly highlights how Gipuzkoa, supported by its City Science Lab (MUBIL & MIT Media Lab), can emerge as a premium territory for digital inclusion.
Moreover, this work stems from the vibrant co-creation process of the International Summer School on Digital Inclusion & GenAI (Donostia–San Sebastián, July 2025)—where municipal leaders, civic technologists, and community groups collaborated to reimagine urban AI through the lens of equity and social cohesion.
The editorial is available—freely accessible—via:
- Springer Nature (Discover Cities) at DOI: 10.1007/s44327-025-00116-9
- SSRN, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu for broader dissemination
It forms part of Prof. Calzada’s ongoing research at the intersection of digital transformation, territorial governance, and socially responsible AI.
